A husband and wife Hugh and Caroline Smith in Millville, New Jersey started collecting paperweights in the 1960s. Toward the end of the decade Hugh began to experiment with glass, making his first paperweight in 1969. Carolyn was content to help her husband for about a year before setting up a bench and making her own designs. Both husband and wife made small weights (about 2 1/4”) usually featuring a single flower set on a contrasting jasper ground. A small number of weights were made by the Smiths through the mid 1970s. Their weights are signed with a cane reading CS or HS and are sometimes scratch signed on the base.
