George Andrew Ebelhare III (Drew) was born on January 27, 1950 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. His family moved to southern Florida when he was ten, where he lived until he left for college. His first two years of college were spent at Lynchburg College in Virginia. He then finished his degree in Scene Design and Technical Theater at Florida State University.
Ebelhare’s first exposure to glass was working in stained glass in Houston in 1977. A glassblowing workshop in Colorado in 1979 convinced him of two things— that he wanted to blow glass, and that he wanted to live in Colorado. It took him two years to assemble a studio for glassblowing in Houston and almost twenty years to realize his goal of living in Colorado. Since 1999, he has lived in Cayon City, Colorado.
Starting to learn glass blowing in 1981, Drew slowly developed his skills. A chance encounter with a member of the Texas Paperweight Collectors’ Association, about 1990, lead to his introduction to the world of fine paperweights. He started making millefiori in 1991. From simple miniatures, Drew progressed by the mid 1990s to making fine close concentric millefiori weights, in the style of St. Louis from the classic period. By this time his colors were well developed, his canes nicely defined, and he was finishing his weights with a good millefiori basket. Ebelhare’s transition from craftsman to artist came in 1999 with the creation of his flower canes. These canes, the most original group of canes in the twentieth century, include; a white & green “Clichy type” rose, camomiles (pink, white or blue), pansies (3 different styles), primroses, a small sunflower and others. Recently Drew has collaborated with lampwork maker Sue Fox, making bouquets with her flowers and his millefiori.

This weight from 2005 has a rocky ledge covered with flowers. This is a very interesting approach, using millefiori canes to represent flowers and leaves in a realistic environment. Drew pans for gold as a hobby, and as a special touch this weight has several tiny nuggets he has found.

3 1/2" diameter.
